Highlighting variable name under the cursor in VimEdit

I’ve seen this as a feature in other editors (Java IDEs, Sublime Text). You can achieve a similar effect using this trick:

I tried it briefly and it’s kind of cool/fun. I don’t know whether I’d actually want it on a regular basis though (for example, it effectively overwrites the standard search highlighting).
